Below is a current list of the classes I have taken for my Paralegal Accelerated Certificate at Metropolitan Community College

  • Paralegal Profession – This class was an introduction to the basics of the paralegal profession, the career expectations, as well as the ethics involved in this profession. The class also helped me begin to learn the legal vocabulary.
  • MS Word for the Law Office – This class taught me how Microsoft Word is used to format, generate and save legal and/or business documents. This included creating mail mergers and macros within the legal profession.
  • Introduction To Law – This class was taught by Judge Stephanie Hansen and gave me a thorough overview as to how laws become laws, and how the justice system works when incorporating those laws in our judicial system. The class also taught how civil and criminal procedures work and the various elements involved in a trial.
  • Legal Research & Writing I & II - These classes were both taught by Professor Jimmie Pinkham and helped me learn the basic to the intricate formatting of the various types of legal documents, The class was also beneficial in teaching what sources are available when conducting legal research, as well as the proper format for case citations.
  • Business Law - This class was taught by Jason Thomas. The class focused on primarily how the law comes into effect with business contracts, transactions, the laws of property, and other legal rights and duties of the business world.
  • Employment Law - This class was also taught by Jason Thomas. This class helped me see how the law comes into effect with businesses when working with their employees. It was interesting to see how Employment Law and Business Law are so similar, yet so different at the same time. The class also focused on affirmative action, discrimination and employee benefits in the working world.
  • Litigation - This class was taught by Sherman Willis. This law class served as a basis for how the various forms of law work when heading into the court room for various legal matters, as well as discussing the Rules of Civil Procedure in federal and state court proceedings.  It also focused on evidence and discovery and gave me an introduction as to how all of the legal documents drafted for court pleadings play a part in the legal realm.
  • Family Law - This class was taught by Carol A. Cleaver. This class was definitely not an easy class to sit through as it focused primarily on the legal aspects of adoption, child support, divorce, marriage and more. I was actually familiar with many of the aspects of this form of law, prior to taking the course since I have been through a divorce. This being the case, it was not always an easy class to discuss and focus on. Still, it was interesting to see other sides of this form of legal study. After taking the class, I truly believe this is an area of law, I would prefer not to get involved professionally.
  • Paralegal Internship 1 - This class was taught by Andrew Sagartz and my internship supervisor was Bill Seidler through Seidler & Seidler, P.C.  At this estate planning law firm, I helped draft pleadings, draft correspondence, conduct legal research, prepare trial exhibits, and file e-filing pleadings. I also assisted with general office duties and organized/maintained case files.
  • Paralegal Internship 2 - This class was taught by Andrew Sagartz and I had two internship supervisors. One supervisor was Bill Seidler, the owner of Seidler & Seidler, P.C. in Omaha, Nebraska.  At this estate planning law firm, I primarily assisted Mr. Seidler with drafting estate planning documents. I also worked with Marti Sleister, a criminal defense attorney with Sleister Law in Fremont, Nebraska. I assisted Ms. Sleister with client correspondence as well as drafting and e-filing legal documents.
  • Wills and Trusts - This class was taught by Judge Stephanie Hansen. This class provided a thorough overview of the estate planning process of creating wills and trusts. There was a lot of material covered in this class; however, it really did provide me with a better understanding of the estate planning process.
  • Bankruptcy Credit Collection - This class was taught by Shereece Dendy-Sanders. This class provided a thorough overview of the various bankruptcy code chapters, the laws governing these codes, and the paperwork involved in filing a bankruptcy case. There was a lot of material covered throughout the class which provided me with a comprehensive understanding as to how the bankruptcy process works.
  • Torts - This class was taught by Christopher Halbert. The class provided me with a detailed description of the various classifications of torts, as well as a basic understanding of tort law. The textbook and lectures covered the essential elements of torts, how legal ethics are applied to torts, and how to research and analyze torts.
