Overall Learning Experience

Bankruptcy Collections & Credit – LAWS 2325 has been one of the most challenging, yet thought-provoking courses I enrolled in as a student at Metropolitan Community College (MCC). I was initially very apprehensive about trying to take a course, which focused on this topic, given that math is not one of my strong suits. However, upon completing the course I can see how the course material has given me a better understanding of the bankruptcy process, as well as enhanced my mathematical skills and analysis.

Growing up in a small farming community during the 1980s, many of my parents’ family members and friends went through bankruptcy, losing their farms and property. While I only witnessed the emotional side of a bankruptcy filing, it was interesting to read about the definitive and comprehensive side of the entire process. I now have a clearer understanding as to why a bankruptcy occurs; why the courts in bankruptcy law rule as they do; and how each chapter of bankruptcy differs.

Along with the mathematics of bankruptcy, the other challenging aspect of this course was learning all of the terminology associated with this form of law. I spent a lot of time reading and rereading the material presented in this course, so I could get a clearer understanding of how the terms applied in various bankruptcy situations. While I must admit one has to consistently work in a law office or financial institution that deals with bankruptcy to remember all of these terms, upon completion of this class I see how all of the pieces fit together in most bankruptcy cases.

Academic and Professional Plans

I am glad I took LAWS 2325 Bankruptcy Collection & Credit course. While working in a financial institution or law field focusing on bankruptcy, still this was a subject area I had no previous knowledge, and it is always helpful to learn something new. I also want to express my sincere appreciation to my instructor, Shereece Dendy-Sanders. She was always extremely helpful with answering any of my questions; and always provided constructive feedback when it came to my coursework. I genuinely appreciated her assistance and instruction.

I have now completed all of the required coursework for my Accelerated Paralegal Degree Certificate at MCC and will graduated this Spring 2022. I am currently in the midst of seeking either a paralegal or legal assistant position within the Omaha-metropolitan community. Additionally, I plan to continue paralegal coursework at MCC, including taking Criminal Law and Evidence & Discovery courses.

Questions for Paralegals

Throughout my classes at MCC I have met several students who are already employed in the legal field. I enjoyed asking these individuals questions about their paralegal careers, especially what they enjoyed as well as did not enjoy about the work they did. This has helped give me a better idea about what area of law I would like to eventually work in. I also made sure to obtain these individuals’ contact information if I should have future questions.

Career Preparations

Along with continued paralegal coursework, I am working diligently to obtain employment as a paralegal. This incudes making contacts with current paralegals; maintaining contact with my current and past instructors at MCC; and continually browsing employment web sites seeking open positions in the paralegal field.
